The favourable geographical climatic condition of
the ancient Taxila attracted mankind since per-historic times.
The earlist know settlement of the Taxila valley is Sarai
Khola which yielded a cultural sequence from late Neolithic to
the iron Age.Another important settlement site Hathial lying
hardly half a kilometre east of the Taxila Museum revealed
two occupational levels.First occupation of the site yielded
kot Dijian Culture (2600-2400 B.C), contemporary to sarai
Khola-I, while second level denotes to the Gandhara Grave
Culture cemeteries of NWFP.in the whole Gandhara region
Hathial is the only settlement site belonging to the Gandhara
Grave Culture (1000 B.C.) has so far been recorded.It was
perhaps at hathial that the Aryans recited the earliest
hymns of the ?gveda between 1200 to 1000 B.C.
